Used the 32g/5’s through my Yildiz 20g = Great hitting/killing power out to 35/40yds. The No5’s patterned better through my gun than the 4 1/2’s by a long way. They do punch hard, so you probably wouldn’t want to fire too many through a lightish 20 bore. £20/Slab cheaper than the RC Semi-Magnums and slightly faster.

I found the 28g/5’s in my yildiz pro sport 32” chocked at 1/2 and 3/4 killed the birds at extreme ranges very cleanly. Very hard hitting with hardly any recoil, they are my go to cartridges in 20 bore.

The South Devon valleys show some of the best sporting birds you could wish for and 32g Black Gold 20 guage No 5 fibre are as good a game cartridge as anyone could ask for. Bearing in mind these are a continental No. 5 shot size, so a true 4 1/3 size. I am not tempted to use more than 1/4 – 1/2 choke, as in my gun with Teague aftermarket chokes, both produce excellent patterns on testing and recoil is acceptable. Ivan Reid at Teague is a great advocate of limiting choke constriction to what performs best in any gun/cartridge combination. With 1/2 choke I get an even 30″ circle at 40 yards with no noticeable central increase in density – that’s not a very large pattern at 40 yards, so I stick with 1/4 and 1/2 choke and Black Gold 32g No 5 Fibre.
